by Alicia Bayer

Independant Publisher, 2017 (162 pages)

As you know, I have been talking endlessly the praises of elderberries.  For one reason, they are so very powerful in their healing abilities.  They contain powerful antioxidants and in the meantime, supports the immune system to help fight off infections.  They also contain large amounts of vitamin C.  Let's make this clear though, only cooked berries are safe.  Raw berries or leaves of the plant contain harmful compounds.  However, when cooked, they are a powerhouse of healing properties.

That's why I was excited to come across this book.  "Elderberries: The Beginner's Guide by Alicia Bayer," is a comprehensive resource for new and experienced foragers, offing detailed instructions on identifying, harvesting, and preserving elderberries and elderflowers.  The book provides information on the plant's health benefits, traditional uses, and scientific background, supplemented by over 70 recipes for everything from immune-boosting syrups, tinctures, and teas to elderflower liqueurs, pies and breads.  The guide is praised for its practical, beginner-friendly approach to using elderberries, although some uses noted a desire for more color photos.

The book offers identification and foraging help, health and medicinal usage, especially for fighting cold and flu symptoms, and preservation thechniques such as freezing, drying and canning to maintain the medicinal and culinary properties.  There is also historical and scientific information as well as growing tips if you want to own your own elderberry shrub from a cutting or transplant.

Key takeaways include safety precautions, versatility of using the elderberries for food was well as potent health remedies. It has been praised as a comprehensive beginner's guide, but I found that even veteran foragers will enjoy it, and the recipes contained within.
